About the artist ~ Joyce Frederick

I am Joyce Frederick …

I am Joyce Crellen Donahue Frederick …
… and I loved painting and drawing since childhood.

My interest in art is probably inherited as my forbear, Sebastien Bourdon, was a 17th-century French artist who has paintings in museums around the world, including 12 paintings in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

As a teenager, I attended the Boston Museum of Fine Arts After School Program.  But when it came to choosing a career, like many women of that era, I chose something much more utilitarian and made my lifelong profession as a Registered Nurse.

Still, while raising my four children in Needham, MA, I took courses at the New England School of Art and Design and worked directly with individual artists such as Selma Bromberg  from whom I learned monotype printing, woodcuts, and etching. I then studied portrait painting for four years with the late Robert Cormier of the Boston School and Fenway Studios.

I moved to Dunstable, MA in 1994 and became a juried member of the Dunstable Artisans.  There I sold my first paintings during their annual show and sale. My home was on the original annual Dunstable Artisan's Tour.

Public exhibits:

  • I painted the "Dunstable Diorama" as a fundraiser for the Dunstable Free Library which continues today.
  • The Women's Imaging Center at the Deaconess-Nashoba Hospital in Ayer, MA chose to display my work.
  • I won an honorable mention at The Beacon Hill Art Walk.
  • I exhibited my work at Gallery 53 in Gloucester for many years.
  • You may now see my works in person by appointment at my studio in Centerville, MA.

Then I bought my dream home with a studio on Cape Cod.

I still participate in workshops with other artists. I used to paint in Europe every year with Charles Gruppe, who became a friend and mentor, until his death in 2019

Some of my favorite subjects are people and places that I visit, and landscapes and seascapes around Cape Cod. Every year I publish a calendar with 12 favorite paintings from that year. Watch for my next edition which will be on sale here on my website.
